Snake
First Appearance Metal Gear
(NES, 1988)
Made Famous By Metal Gear Solid
(PSX, 1998)
Last Appearance* Metal Gear Solid 3
(PS2, 2004)

There's a whole generation of gamers that don't realize that Snake is old-school. So old-school, in fact, that it comes as no surprise to NES gamers that Snake appears in Brawl, considering the original Metal Gear game (which isn't Metal Gear Solid) premiered on the NES twenty years ago. Snake is easily the most "badass" of all characters on the Brawl roster, toting a wide array of heavy weapons from rocket launchers to grenades to landmines. Snake means business, friends, and he'll blow you to smithereens if you aren't careful.

This one-man army appears not as he did during his two NES adventures, but rather as he did in the original PlayStation title Metal Gear Solid, which dragged the Metal Gear franchise out of obscurity and back into the limelight. The fact that Metal Gear Solid was later remade for the GameCube as "Twin Snakes" is further proof that Nintendo and Snake love each other, even if Konami's future smash-hit MGS4 will only appear on the PlayStation3. But, here's hoping the NES cult classic Metal Gear is released on the Virtual Console to commemorate Snake's appearance in Brawl sometime soon!

Ike
First Appearance Fire Emblem: PoR
(GCN, 2005)
Made Famous By Fire Emblem: PoR
(GCN, 2005)
Last Appearance* Fire Emblem: RD
(Wii, 2007)

Compared to a vast majority of the thirty-five playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ike is a newcomer to the scene. His first game debuted only three years ago in the GameCube's last days. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance wasn't only one of the last epic GameCube titles, but it's where Ike got his humble start as a Nintendo character. And he was so popular and well-liked, especially across the Pacific, that his inclusion into the Brawl seemed like a no-brainer.

Joining Marth as the only two Fire Emblem representatives in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ike appears to have taken the place of Roy on the roster (Roy having appeared in Melee). But there are major differences between Ike and Marth, and not only in the realm of how the characters play in the game. Marth is royalty, while Ike is just a normal guy put into an extraordinary situation. But both Marth and Ike find themselves in the most extraordinary situation imaginable -- The Brawl. Will Fire Emblem fans find themselves torn over which character to use? The familiar or the new? That is the question they must answer.

Link
First Appearance Legend of Zelda
(NES, 1986)
Made Famous By Legend of Zelda
(NES, 1986)
Last Appearance* Link's Crossbow T.
(Wii, 2007)

Having debuted over two decades ago on the NES, Link is one of the staples of the Nintendo cast of characters. The Legend of Zelda was where he got his start, and he hasn't looked back since, appearing as the hero in game after game after game across the spectrum of Nintendo's consoles and handhelds. Most recently, he's appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, the first game in the extensive Zelda series to have been released almost simultaneously on two different Nintendo consoles.

Wearing his traditional green garb with pierced Elvin ears, brown gauntlets, and a green cap, Link is yet another of the "cast of twelve" to have appeared in all three Smash Bros. games. He brings his impressive arsenal of weapons to any fight he's in, whether it's his trademark bow and arrow, the Master Sword, or an all-new addition to the Brawl -- the Gale Boomerang of Twilight Princess fame. Link's allure to Smashers novice and veteran alike is therefore obvious. Not only is he one of Nintendo's best-known characters, but his stash of weaponry alone is worth giving him a go.

Falco
First Appearance Star Fox
(SNES, 1993)
Made Famous By Star Fox
(SNES, 1993)
Last Appearance* Star Fox Command
(DS, 2006)

Of the elite pilots in Fox's inner circle in the Star Fox series, Falco Lombardi might be the most skilled and respected. Making his original appearance on the SNES in 1993 (along with the rest of the "core" Star Fox cast), Falco has been a relative mainstay in the series ever since. Sure, he's elusive at times -- he leaves the team of pilots after the events in Star Fox 64 -- but his absence is short-lived in terms of the series' plot overall. It appears he can't stay away from his starcraft for very long, after all.

Falco is a fan favorite, with Nintendo fans in general and Star Fox fans in particular. He's so popular, in fact, that he joined Fox as the series' only representatives on the GameCube launch game Super Smash Bros. Melee. And now, he returns to Brawl in the robust thirty-five character roster made in Nintendo Heaven. Just make sure to enjoy his presence, because knowing Falco and his well-documented tendency to disappear suddenly, he may not be around for a possible fourth game in the Smash Bros. series.

Ness
First Appearance Earthbound
(SNES, 1995)
Made Famous By Earthbound
(SNES, 1995)
Last Appearance* SSB Melee
(GCN, 2001)

Ness, a young lad from Onett town, must have thought he was having a nightmare when he was startled awake by a crashing meteorite, which would lead him on an epic adventure battling aliens across both space and time. Thankfully, Ness isn't your ordinary kid -- as even a mere infant, he displayed unusual physic powers that he would have to learn to harness in order to combat the threat to his world.

As an original member of the Smash Series, Ness's inclusion isn't all that surprising. However, while his appearance may be slightly less unusual than many of his peers, he's still one of the most difficult players to control. Most notable is his recovery move, which sees him releasing a string of energy which he must then redirect into his body, sending him flying. It's tough to control, but when mastered, is one of the most effective tactics in the game.

Mr. Game & Watch
First Appearance G&W Series
(G&W, 1980-1991)
Made Famous By G&W Series
(G&W, 1980-1991)
Last Appearance* SSB Melee
(GCN, 2001)

You want to talk about old-school? It doesn't get much more old-school in the world of Nintendo than Mr. Game & Watch. The Game & Watch series was a series of LCD handhelds released by Nintendo, beginning in 1980 and running straight through into the early 1990s. Mr. Game & Watch was the handheld series' mascot, making appearances in several of the games over the decade that the Game & Watch was dominant. Because the Game & Watch was initially released in 1980, and Donkey Kong was released in 1981 (introducing both DK and Mario), Mr. Game & Watch is not only Nintendo's oldest character, but the oldest character appearing in the Brawl.

It takes some time and effort to unlock Mr. Game & Watch, but when you do, you'll find that it was well worth it. He looks like a monochrome LCD character, which is hysterical, and his movements and moves both mimic this LCD mantra, making the character true to form. His stage and final smash are equally as cool, but we won't litter this with too many spoilers. Needless to say, Mr. Game & Watch is one of the game's most unique characters, and with thirty-five characters total on the roster, that's a big statement.

Toon Link
First Appearance Zelda: WW
(GCN, 2003)
Made Famous By Zelda: WW
(GCN, 2003)
Last Appearance* Zelda: PH
(DS, 2007)

Few Zelda titles carry as much controversy with them as The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker did (and does to this day). In the year or so leading up to the game's release in the early spring of 2003, arguments littered internet message boards everywhere. Was the cell-shading, "kiddie" feel to the game really necessary? Was it going to ruin the gaming experience, or perhaps even enhance it? Well, those questions (and many more) were answered, but unfortunately for the flame wars on the message boards, it's all a matter of personal opinion. Wind Waker-related debates rage on to this very day.

But an awesome addition to the Brawl roster is that of Toon Link, who takes the place of Young Link from Super Smash Bros. Melee. He's a clone, just like Young Link was, but that's okay -- he's still a super cool unlockable that will make Zelda fans very, very happy. Who cares if you like Wind Waker or not? The roster is more robust with the inclusion of Toon Link. And that's a good thing.

Wario
First Appearance Super Mario Land 2
(GB, 1992)
Made Famous By Wario Land: SML3
(GB, 1994)
Last Appearance* Wario Ware: SM
(Wii, 2007)

Wario was introduced to the gaming world as Mario's greedy adversary in Super Mario Land 2. It appears that if someone has something he doesn't, he'll stop at nothing to obtain it for himself, such as Mario's castle. However, ever since he was defeated, he's largely given up on battling Mario in favor of starring in his own line of games against enemies of his own. But perhaps Wario's greatest accomplishment is his starring role in the WarioWare series, in which Wario tried to peddle his crazy inventions by infusing them with rapid-paced micro-games.

Alright, so Wario's another newbie to the Smash series, and he has a very interesting play style. His most distinctive attack sees him rolling around on his custom-built Wario chopper, running over anything in his path. Wario's also not well known for his manners – or should we say lack of them – demonstrated by his ability to unleash a massive gas cloud at will. However, because of Wario's large frame, he's not the fastest nor most athletic characters, and can be difficult to handle.

Sonic
First Appearance Sonic the H.
(GEN, 1991)
Made Famous By Sonic the H.
(GEN, 1991)
Last Appearance* Sonic RA
(DS, 2007)

Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut in 1990 on the Sega Genesis, in what would start a long-running feud between not only himself and Mario, but between Sega and Nintendo as well. His blindingly fast speed and no-nonsense attitude offered an alternative for those tired of Mario's sickingly cute gameplay. But while Mario would continue to prosper, Sonic has hit some hard times in recent years. Although his first 3D appearance in Sonic Adventure was met with mostly good reviews, it sparked a downhill trend that Sonic has arguably yet to recover from. The hatchet has been buried between Sega and Nintendo, however. Nintendo clearly won the war, and Sega games and characters alike appear on both the Wii and the DS.

Despite his most recent games not living up to those of yore, Sonic's presence in Super Smash is no less surprising. He's the fastest character in the game, and his lightning-speed suite of attacks are difficult to predict and even harder to evade. But perhaps fittingly, he's also one of the toughest to come to grips with, because controlling Sonic takes some serious practice. Thankfully, as one of the latter unlockable characters you'll come across, you should get plenty of practice in with a variety of other characters before playing as Sonic becomes much of an issue for you.
